Triple-X domain names on the Web may soon be a reality. ICANN, the agency that controls domain names is considering adding .xxx to the list of online suffixes like .com, .org, and .net. While the move may help block content from homes and businesses, it would not force sites to use the dot triple-x address.

It will only work if pornographers choose to use the .xxx domain and choose not to use any other domains.
The porn industry isn't completely behind dot triple-x, and some see the move as creating a ghetto for adult content and setting rules where they don't want any.
Eric Goldman:
I have been in opponent of the dot triple x domain for a very long time because I fear that regulators will try to force pornographers into that domain in ways that would run afoul of constitutional consideration.
The decision is primarily a victory for ICM Registry, which has applied to be able to register and manage the suffix. The company stands to make millions from its approval and is offering to donate a portion of their revenue to child protection initiatives.

Each and every Website that is under the .xxx tld has what they call a Metatag Data inserted in the Website so that the common browsers and filters can easily pick that up with 100 percent efficiency, so, you know, parents can make sure at desktop level that the adult content is being filtered out,
The suffix could be up and running within six to nine months if ICANN gives final approval.

The Internet's pretty important, so once we do things it's very hard to undo them, so we think it's appropriate that we move with, you know, reasonable caution.
If approved, the move will end a decade-long battle over what some consider formal acknowledgment of pornography's prominent place on the Web.
